Muscovy

This is a breed that we’ve had from the very beginning.  I’ve always liked them.  They have a brain and a personality.  My husband still can’t get past “that nasty stuff” on their face called caruncling.  For the past couple of years we’ve only kept hens.  The drakes we’ve had became too tame and were actually dangerous.  We now have a new drake.  He was not raised to be tame or socialize with people.   So hopefully he will not become aggressive in the spring.

I mainly keep this breed for their mothering abilities.  They are the best setters and mothers.  I do put call eggs under them.  I had a hen this past year that had 5 eggs under her one evening.  The next morning I reached under her and there was nothing.  I couldn’t figure out what had happened to my eggs and by this time could be ducklings.  But I could hear them.  She had 5 beautiful call babies up in her wings all fluffy and dry.  Of course she wasn’t pleased when I took them.

If the egg is fertile they will  hatch it.  I also use them for my Pekins, Runners, and Snowy Mallards.  I do let them raise these breeds, since the ducklings are bigger.

I am not a Muscovy breeder, but the birds we have are nice breeders.   We have chocolates and blacks.   This will probably be the next breed that we drop, since I have a larger incubator.  These birds will be available in June.   They would be good for someone wanting a start in Muscovys.
