Exhibition Pekins

Pekins are beautiful white ducks that originated in China.  They arrived in the United States in 1873 and soon became the primary meat breed.  Commercial birds can reach a weight of 8 lbs in 7 weeks.

We’ve always had a pekin on the farm.  There is nothing prettier than a white duck.   We phased out our commercial birds 2 years ago.  My kids still raise a few hatchery birds for their 4-H projects.  The difference in most commercial Pekins, and the true exhibition birds is unbelievable.  I think a lot of people pass Pekins by as show winners, but they are very capable of being on champion row.

We hatched around 30 birds this year.  I was going to try an August hatch, but my hens decided to molt instead.  Out of the 30 I ended up keeping 3.  These birds are in the 13-15 lb range.  We refer to them as the big guys.

We did very well with them at the shows we attended.  Most notable was Best and Reserve Best at the Ohio National with a drake and a young pullet (his daughter) out of my last hatch this year.  The drake went on to champion row as Reserve Heavy Duck.
