Snowy Call
I purchased my snowys in the fall of 04 from a well known breeder. I purchased one darker pair and one lighter pair all with decent type.
I had quite a surprise when I started hatching this year. I got 25% white ducklings. Some breeders will cross their snowys with grays to improve type and darken the coloring. White is not a color that most breeders would add to their snowys.
It would take me forever to figure out if 2, 3, or all 4 of my birds carry this recessive. And I did hatch some decent birds this spring. I have decided that since they are producing show and breeder quality offspring, I will continue with them.
All the white birds hatched from them this year were sold as pets. In my opinion these whites should not be put back in the breeding program because they will increase the % of whites hatched. They should not be put in a white call breeding program either, because they may be masking color. You could get a nasty surprise a few years down the line.
With all that said, I will be offering fertile eggs, ducklings, and breeders in the fall. It is possible that some of the eggs will produce white ducklings and some of the birds may carry a white recessive gene.
