White Call

I didn’t hatch any whites this year.  (Let me correct that-I did but they came from my snowys.  See my snowy page for that tale.)  Anyway, I thought I would be smart and keep a small drake that I really liked and breed him back to his mother. White Call So I sold his father which was a larger bird but in proportion.

I kept putting eggs in the incubator and hoping.  In May I was able to get another drake.  I had him shipped.  And he basically molted the minute I took him out of the box.  I never even saw him mate with my hens.  I later spoke with the breeder I bought him from and found out he was feeding 26% protein.  I only feed around 18%.  So between the stress of shipping and the drastic feed change, I was doomed.

This is one of those lessons that you learn as you go.  Never depend on one drake.  I’ve started keeping 2-3 extras even though they may never get used.
